Solid Gold, Gold Filled, or Gold Plated?
This is the question we answer most at the counter. A heavy, bright chain can be plated brass, and a worn little ring can be solid 18K. The stamp is the first clue. GP, GEP, HGE, and RGP mean a thin coat of gold over base metal, with almost no melt value. GF or a mark like 1/20 12K means gold filled: a thicker layer, worth a little, but far below solid gold.
Two marks confuse people the other way. 14KP means 14K plumb, which is solid gold. Vermeil and 925 stamps on yellow jewelry mean gold over sterling, so the value is mostly silver. We test every piece and tell you which is which, even when the answer is not what you hoped.

Scrap and everyday jewelry are paid as a share of melt. Look for a stamp inside the ring shank, on the clasp, or near the end of a chain: 10K or 417, 14K or 585, 18K or 750, 21K or 875, 22K or 916, 24K or 999. A 14KP stamp means 14K plumb, which is solid 14K gold. A stamp is a good sign but not proof, so we confirm the metal at the counter before making an offer.
