Searching for a silver buyer near me usually means one thing: you want a fair number, fast. Every silver item has a floor and a ceiling. The floor is the metal: how much pure silver it holds at today's price. The ceiling is what it could sell for as jewelry, a collectible coin, or a complete flatware service. We check both before we quote.
Check inside ring shanks, on clasps, on the back of spoon handles, and on the base of hollowware. Under the FTC Guides for the Jewelry Industry, only metal that is at least 92.5% silver can be sold as sterling in the US.
| Stamp | Silver content | Where you usually see it |
|---|---|---|
| 999 / Fine | 99.9% | Bullion bars, rounds, and Silver Eagles |
| 958 / Britannia | 95.8% | British hallmarked silver |
| 950 | 95.0% | Mexican and Taxco jewelry |
| 925 / Sterling / Ster | 92.5% | Most US jewelry, flatware, and hollowware |
| 900 / Coin | 90.0% | Pre 1965 US coins and early American coin silver |
| 800 | 80.0% | Older German, Italian, and European pieces |
| EP / EPNS / Plate | Trace only | Silver plated base metal, little melt value |
Most people with a coffee can of old change do not realize how much silver is in it. Here is what common US coins and bullion actually hold.
| Coin or bar | Silver | Pure silver |
|---|---|---|
| Dimes, quarters, halves, 1964 and older | 90% | About 0.715 oz per $1 face |
| Morgan and Peace dollars | 90% | 0.7734 oz each |
| Kennedy halves, 1965 to 1970 | 40% | About 0.148 oz each |
| War nickels, 1942 to 1945 | 35% | About 0.056 oz each |
| American Silver Eagle | 99.9% | 1 oz each |

A full sterling service for eight or twelve is often the most valuable silver in a Houston home, and it is also the easiest to misjudge. Forks and spoons are usually solid silver. Knives are not: most have a stainless steel blade and a hollow handle packed with filler, so only the handle shell counts.
Hollowware works the same way. Candlesticks and some bowls are weighted with pitch or plaster, and many tea sets are plated even when they look heavy. We separate sterling from plate, deduct what is not silver, and show you the net weight before we quote.

Bring it to the Heights and we will test it for free. If it is plated, we will tell you straight, with no pressure to sell anything.

Call (832) 295-9155You can sell silver jewelry at Houston Cash For Gold, 1801 Durham Drive Suite 9 in the Heights, close to downtown, Montrose, and the Galleria. Walk in with no appointment, and we test and weigh your sterling, coins, flatware, or bullion in front of you, give you a free offer, and pay the same day if you accept. Call (832) 295-9155.
Start with the melt value: weight in grams, times purity (0.925 for sterling, 0.900 for pre 1965 US coins), divided by 31.1 to get troy ounces, times the day's silver spot price. A buyer pays a share of melt on scrap and a price closer to market on bullion. Signed designer pieces and collectible coins can be worth more than melt, so we price each item before we quote.
Look for a 925, Sterling, or Ster stamp inside the ring shank, on the clasp, or on the back of a spoon handle. Mexican pieces often read .950 or .925 with a Taxco mark, and older European silver may read 800. A stamp is a good sign but not proof, so we confirm the metal at the counter before making an offer.
Pieces marked EP, EPNS, Silver Plate, or Quadruple Plate have only a thin layer of silver over base metal, so they carry almost no melt value and we usually cannot make a metal offer on them. Bring them anyway if you are not sure. Plated and sterling flatware often get mixed in the same drawer, and we will sort them for you.
Yes. Broken chains, bent rings, lone earrings, and dented hollowware still hold their full silver content, and the offer on scrap is driven by purity and weight, not looks. Bring everything in one bag, including the tangled bits, and we will test and weigh it together.
US dimes, quarters, and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier are 90% silver. Every $1 in face value holds about 0.715 troy ounces of pure silver, so a roll of forty pre 1965 quarters ($10 face) holds about 7.15 ounces. Kennedy halves from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver, and nickels from 1942 to 1945 are 35%. Rare dates and high grades can be worth more than melt.
Silver is an industrial metal as much as a precious one. It is the best electrical and thermal conductor of any metal, so it goes into electronics, solar panels, and cars, and the Silver Institute reported record industrial demand of 680.5 million ounces in 2024. That steady demand is a big part of why the spot price holds up.
Bring a valid government issued photo ID, which Texas law requires for every sale, plus your silver in any condition. Boxes, certificates, and receipts help on designer jewelry and graded coins. Do not polish old silver or clean coins first: polishing wears down hallmarks, and cleaning a coin can cut its collector value. Send a few photos and we will reply with a starting range. The final number is set at the counter once the silver is tested and weighed.
